Jaws of Life

An interesting bit here in Globe Auto... about how much more difficult it is for emergency workers to extricate car crash victims, now that vehicles have so many safety features. That's one of those things you never think about.  Extrications on newer cars can now take twice as long as they used to, extending the critical arrival time at a hospital.  Apparently air bags and hybrid car cables present real hazards.  Interesting read.

The Popemobile

popemobile.jpg BBC Photo

Definitely unique and one-of-a-kind. Probably top of the line in safety features, though. Newsweek's got a great story on the vehicle --  a customized Mercedes ML 430. They note that it is not officially called the Popemobile, but hey, you gotta' call if something. Of course, the glass is bulletproof. AND, 0-60 in eight seconds. If you haven't seen the TV coverage of the Pope's visit, it's been great.

Pre-1976 Cars Not Exempt?

chevelle.jpg

Here's a little tidbit that does not bode well for California car owners... "California State Senator Dean Florez has proposed a new bill that, if passed, will repeal the emissions exemption on pre-1976 cars in eight California counties. This means your classic car would have to pass California’s emissions test for the life of the vehicle."

Found that over at Japanese Nostalgic Car...
